3/13 - Voice of the Martyrs

Why have so many Christians been willing to suffer and die for their faith?

It’s hard to wrap our heads around from where we are in America today. But right now, hundreds of millions of Christians are facing persecution for their beliefs. This may be hostile laws passed by their governments, social rejection in their communities, physical abuse from family members, and more. Some Christians have been forced to flee. Others have lost family to violence. Still more are in prison for their beliefs. Christianity is the most persecuted belief system in the world but this has been an accepted part of what it means to be Christian since the very beginning.

The other night we read Jesus’ words in John 16. He is speaking to His disciples and describes the violence and rejection that is coming their way because they follow Him. But He also promises to send His Holy Spirit to lead us through such times. He encourages us to remember that we are following in His footsteps and that He was willing to suffer and die for us.

In addition to reflecting on this passage, we did something a little different, something that is not easy to summarize. Each student was given a Voice of the Martyrs magazine with modern news stories about persecuted Christians. We each found a story inside, read it over and then shared it with the class. It was a blessing to feel our group connecting to others around the world who have it so much harder than we do.

That said, it was also inspiring to consider the ways we can grow from their examples. Our schools are not exactly welcoming places for the gospel of Christ. It is a challenge to rise to the call and stand up for Jesus even when it is unpopular, yet I believe that Christ is preparing each of us to do just that.
